Tales straight from the trail

Beverley Forrester - coloured sheep breeder - fashion designer

Following in the footsteps of her forefathers Beverley Forrester for many years farmed the green undulating hills of the family’s sheep and cattle property at Hawarden, Nth Canterbury. There, under her brand of “Black Hills, NZ Wools Naturally”, she developed an international reputation in the breeding of sheep for their fine wools and natural colours which she had spun into fine yarn for sale both within NZ and overseas. This yarn Beverley used to create her own brand of designer clothing, “Beverley Riverina”.

Beverley more recently moved from her farm at Hawarden to Leithfield where she has continued to market and sell her yarns and clothing from her new location which she

calls “The Wool Barn”. Beverley welcomes visitors to visit her there and to share her stories about the history of the early settlement of Nth Canterbury, sample her woollen yarns and designer clothing.

The first thing I noticed when I visited Beverley in wool shed some time ago was the number of ribbons representing her achievements in wool classing competitions at the Canterbury Show over the years. These were evidence of her skills in breeding coloured sheep for their fine quality wools.

Beverley will enjoy meeting you to share her life's experiences in farming, breeding and making beautiful woollen clothing over a cup of tea and biscuit.
