Palliser Ridge

Palliser Ridge, the 2019 winner of the Ballance Environmental Farm Award, is a predominantly sheep and beef 1300ha farm in South Wairarapa with an 8000 strong flock of sheep and 1600 cattle.

In response to the changing environmental and economic conditions confronting farming in NZ the focus of the farm's management has been to diversify, to set up wool, honey and tourism businesses. It's about the "spreading of risk in a changing world". To help combat erosion on some steep hill country 500 poplar poles are planted annually and one wetland, three shelterbelts and around 4000 native trees are planted every year to combat sedimentation, nutrient runoff and provide shelter for stock. And, in the process, carbon is being stored. The meat from the farm is processed locally and distributed throughout the Wairarapa region. The beehives are looked after by a local family and its wool is shorn, scoured and spun into yarn in NZ.
