The Astro Cafe

Sitting atop Ōtehīwai Mount John, with expansive views right across the MacKenzie Basin, in the heart of the MacKenzie Country, you will find, nestled among the telescopes and antenna of the Mt John Observatory, the Astro Cafe. This is a place where people from all around NZ and the world go to observe the neighbouring planets, the stars, galaxies and beyond, and to relax later,

To quote The Lonely Planet. the Astro Cafe has "quite possibly the best location for a cafe you can find". The Cafe serves the visitors to the Observatory with a range of drinks, including delicious barista-made coffees. The cabinet food selection includes sweet and savoury options, which cater for most dietary restrictions.
For those weary travellers who would like to stretch their legs after a long road journey they can take a 30-45 minute walk around the summit of Mt John.
The Cafe's opening hours are Friday - Monday || 10am - 5pm (final order at 4.30pm)
Astro Café is closed Tuesday - Thursday.
